Explore a Future in the Fire Service

Interested in learning more about the fire service? Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts offers opportunities for individuals to experience the profession firsthand, learn alongside our members, and begin building a foundation for a future career in fire and emergency services.

Whether you are just beginning to explore the fire service or are ready to take the next step toward becoming a firefighter, our Ride-Along and Firefighter Apprenticeship programs provide an opportunity to learn more about the work our members do each day.

Ride-Along Program

Our Ride-Along Program gives young community members ages 14 to 18 an opportunity to experience life at the fire station and gain a firsthand look at the responsibilities of firefighters and paramedics. Participants can observe emergency responses, daily station routines, training, equipment maintenance, and other aspects of life in the fire service.

Ride-along participants serve strictly as observers, but are encouraged to ask questions, interact with our members, and use the experience to learn more about careers in fire and emergency services.

Those interested in participating must complete a Ride-Along Program application and liability waiver. An interview with the participant and their parent or guardian will be scheduled before the ride-along.

For information, contact Firefighter/Paramedic Montana Bochette at Manderson@marengofirerescue.org.

Apprenticeship Program

For individuals interested in pursuing a career as a firefighter, our Firefighter Apprenticeship Program combines hands-on experience with education and training alongside experienced fire service professionals.

Apprentices have the opportunity to work with fire crews, receive instruction in fire science, emergency medical care, equipment operation, and firefighter safety, and develop important skills in teamwork, communication, emergency response, and problem-solving.

Applicants must generally be at least 18 years old, possess a valid driver’s license, meet the physical requirements of the program, and live within the McHenry County area. The program also includes a path toward fire academy training following completion of EMT-B with national licensure.

For additional information about the Firefighter Apprenticeship Program or application process, contact Captain/Training Officer Heather Yoder at Hyoder@marengofirerescue.org.
